Director's Note

Shakespeare’s TWELFTH NIGHT follows the themes of most of his shows - someone had something happen in their life and shenanigans ensue! But what is special about this cut of Twelfth Night is it celebrates all the nuisances of a day in a regular life. There is tragedy, buoyed by friendships and love. There are annoying coworkers and true friends. There is not a clean ending, but a happy one.

When I was approached for this piece, one of my favorite things about Twelfth Night was how ridiculous the plot is and how much fun it is to watch and perform. Our actors are just that - people who are being people inside of a play. They may talk differently than we do now, but they are saying the same things - I want to be loved, to live a life, to be seen. This is a cast inspired by each other and their work; the evolution of this piece is inspired by what it is like to be backstage and onstage, with lots of laughter sprinkled in.

I hope you enjoy the show.

About Twelfth Night
(The play and the holiday.)

Twelfth Night, a play penned by William Shakespeare is a delightful comedy that explores themes of love, mistaken identity, and the topsy-turvy nature of human relationships. Set in the land of Illyria, the play follows the journey of Viola, who disguises herself as a man named Cesario, leading to a series of comedic misunderstandings and romantic entanglements. The title of the play is derived from the tradition of celebrating the twelfth night after Christmas, also known as the Feast of Epiphany or Twelfth Night. This holiday marks the end of the Christmas season and is characterized by festive revelry, feasting, and the removal of Christmas decorations. In both contexts, whether theatrical or festive, Twelfth Night encapsulates a spirit of merriment and revelry, emphasizing the unpredictable and joyous nature of life.
